I am not a hater I am a keeper!

Thought I would get this off my chest after all this is what this blog is here for :-)

I am a reptile keeper and seeing what I do through a keepers eyes makes me ashame of being a keeper ! With the increase of people coming into this hobby being such new keepers well actually new to the hobby all together they always end up on one site inparticular and to be honest that site isn't the best for knowledge. I wonder why so many 'newbies' have a chip on their shoulder but then I look at where they get their advice, If you ask a question you get jumped on if you want advice you get it from 5 different angles ( which one do they listen to ) So they act like they have been treated ( This is not all new keepers though ) I know theres some AWESOME keepers/breeders out there but heck theres some idiots as well ! So what if you have a large expensive collection but do you have the knowledge that comes with it do you have the experience or do you have a bit of cash which you 'invested' into your expensive collection. Now to the point of saying that, theres so MANY people out there who do have money to put into their collection but they don't have the knowledge to keep them so then the animal suffers, The amount of people I have spoken to that have only been in the hobby a couple of months all say one thing 'It's not hard to feed a snake is it' is that all what this hobby is about just feeding a snake or is it about learning about the snake and what enviroment suits the animal ?

Whoops had a little break and lost track of thought never mind :-)

Anyhow anyone else noticed the increase of bearded dragons hitting the current market and the sales hitting rock bottom would this mean it now is time to stop breeding them or at least put the eggs in the freezer! After all how many unwanted bearded dragons are there now ! I believe in breeding but heck this is now just pure over breeding!

I was going to have a good old rant but something distracted my mind so will try and post more later !

First of many,

Well completely new to this 'Blogging' but thought it would be a good place to start with the whole 'Exotic Industry'. In this day and age you would expect information to be available at the click of a button heck people have the World Wide Web at their finger tips so why is it there are SO many ill informed 'Newbies' who really can't be bothered to do their own research and expect it to be handed to them on a plate and will listen to any garbage they are told.

I understand that everyone needs to start somewhere but Heck me at least do your research before buying the animal! I'm not saying all new keepers are useless because I bet theres a boat load of sensible ones out there that do their research and understand what they need before buying an animal but you never hear of those you always hear about the one that forgot to put a bulb guard on his bulb or ceramic heater and now their snakes got a HUGE burn or another one is I used masking tape to stick up something in my viv and now my snakes got it on his body. Theres more out there which to be honest are down right dumb! You have it with Lizard keepers to my bearded dragon keeps bobbing his head at me what do I do, At least the animals health isn't at stake here! Also why is it that Pet shops ( not all ) always say the best thing to use is Calci-Sand it's absolutely great ( yea if you want a dead animal in the future ) I also hear that the best gecko to have is a fat one, But what is fat you see some and they are OBESE I'm telling you geckos should not have flabby armpits!

I think a bit about me is in order, I am me naturally I am human. I have a passion for exotic animals and about their welfare and to be honest people in the industry are to afraid to speak to worry to have a voice because of who they might offend but guess what I'm not afraid to speak my voice I don't mind people not liking my opinion I couldn't care if I upset big breeders after all I'm not doing this to be popular or any other alterior motive I'm doing this for the animals those that I am passionate about. We have organisations in the hobby but will they fight for the issues which need to be fought for or will they just sit their idley and watch it pass by ? Issues which they aren't comfortable in fighting for. What I am about is to take on those who think they are untouchable be it a GOOD thing for the hobby or a bad thing for the hobby if it's an issue then it needs to be addressed!

You will notice that some of what I say won't really make sense to you but it does to me so no need to worry there. I will be updating when I can and what it will be about I do not know until I type :-) Some would call me all the names under the sun but others would sing my praises, After all this is about the animals.

Out.
